Supporting your Optical Test Equipment

Optical calibration is the rigorous process of verifying and adjusting instruments that measure light properties or utilize light for physical measurement. In the world of optical metrology, even microscopic deviations can lead to significant errors. Our accredited calibration capabilities cover the full spectrum of optical measurement systems, offering expert calibration for optical sensors, laser power meters, interferometry-based tools, and complex vision systems.

We support a global client base with both laboratory-based solutions and onsite calibration, ensuring your equipment operates within strict manufacturer specifications. Whether you require fiber optic calibration services for telecommunications or precision optics verification for aerospace, our team ensures your equipment performs at its peak.

What is Optical Calibration?

Optical calibration is the intersection of physics and quality assurance, rigorously comparing instrument performance against a traceable standard. Unlike mechanical tools, optical devices measure light properties—such as intensity, frequency, or geometry—which are highly susceptible to environmental drift.

This process involves more than a simple check. We perform precise adjustments to correct optical alignment, fine-tune wavelength calibration, and linearize sensor responses. Whether certifying fiber networks or conducting dimensional inspection, calibration quantifies the measurement error and brings your equipment back within strict manufacturer specifications, restoring true optical accuracy you can rely on.

What is its Importance?

In industries driven by data and precision, accuracy and quality is non-negotiable. Optical testing ensures that your instruments see the truth, preventing costly manufacturing defects and network failures.

  • Quality Control: Ensures parts measured on optical comparators fit perfectly, maintaining high measurement accuracy.
  • Network Integrity: In telecommunications, accurate wavelength calibration prevents signal loss and data corruption.
  • Safety: Correct laser calibration ensures safe operating environments for medical and industrial personnel.

Applications

Accurate light measurement is vital to the film, video and photography industries, but is also a major issue for OSHA compliance, security, clean room standards, industrial processes and environments that contain photosensitive materials.

At Micro Precision, we understand that light is a physical quantity that must be measured with the same rigor as mass or temperature. Our optical calibration services break down these complex physical interactions into traceable, quantifiable metrics. By isolating and verifying variables such as wave properties, geometric propagation, and photonic energy, we ensure that your precision optics deliver strict measurement accuracy in every application.

In order to ensure optical accuracy, we verify specific physical variables based on fundamental optical principles. Our process covers photometric calibration, radiometric calibration, and dimensional verification.

  • Optical Power (Intensity): We perform radiometric calibration to measure how strong or bright the light signal is. This ensures your laser or optical sensor calibration yields the exact energy level required (measured in dBm or Watts).
  • Wavelength (Color/Frequency): We conduct wavelength calibration to verify that the light is the exact frequency it claims to be. This is critical for fiber optics, where specific colors of light carry distinct data streams.
  • Magnification Accuracy: For precision optics like microscopes, we verify magnification accuracy using calibrated optical standards to ensure microscopes and vision systems measure dimensions correctly at any zoom level, maintaining strict optical accuracy.
  • Attenuation (Signal Loss): We measure how much light is lost as it travels through a cable, a key parameter in fiber optic calibration for testing network efficiency.
  • Linearity: We verify that your optical test equipment is accurate across its entire range, ensuring it reads just as accurately when measuring a weak signal as it does a strong one.
  • Geometric Alignment (X-Y): For optical measurement systems like comparators, we verify optical system geometry, ensuring comparators, vision systems, and profile projectors maintain precise straightness, perpendicularity, and scaling, correcting any optical system alignment errors.
  • Return Loss (Reflection): We measure how much light bounces back towards the source, often using interferometry techniques to detect defects that could disrupt data transmission.
  • Illuminance (Brightness): For safety meters, photometric calibration ensures the instrument correctly reads the amount of visible light hitting a surface (measured in Lux).

FAQs

We cover almost everything that uses light to measure. This includes fiber optic testers (like OTDRs and optical power meters) used in telecom, as well as dimensional inspection tools (like optical comparators and microscopes) used in manufacturing. If it measures light or uses light to measure a part, our optical calibration lab can handle it.

Not necessarily. We know that shipping sensitive optical devices can be risky and expensive. That is why we offer onsite calibration aside from our in-lab services. Our technicians can come to your facility to calibrate your optical measurement systems right where they sit. This is especially recommended for large items like Optical Comparators or delicate Video Measuring Machines.

Yes. Unlike manufacturers who might stop supporting older models to sell you new ones, we support legacy equipment. As long as the unit is functioning mechanically, we can use our optical metrology standards to verify its accuracy and keep it in service longer.

No. While we specialize in all forms of electrical equipment calibration services, our capabilities often extend to electrical mechanical calibration. This includes devices that measure electrical input but have a mechanical output, such as torque wrenches with electrical readouts, or specialized pressure sensors used in electrical environments.

The standard industry recommendation is once a year (every 12 months). However, if your test equipment is used very heavily or in a harsh environment (like a dusty factory floor), you might need it done every 6 months to ensure consistent and reliable accurate results.
