The HP 3245A Universal source can generate precise DC Voltages, DC Currents, AC Voltages, and AC Currents. In the DCV Mode, it can generate precise DC Voltage outputs from -10.25 to +10.25 V DC with 6 digits of resolution (24 bits) in high resolution mode or 3.5 digits (12 bits) in the low resolution mode. DC Currents can be output in the range of -0.1 A to 0.1 A. AC Voltage and current outputs include sine, square up to 1 MHz plus Ramp waveforms up to 100 KHz. Variable duty cycles from 5% to 95% are selectable up to 100 KHz. The HP 3245A has seven voltage ranges and four current ranges plus selectable zero or 50 ohms output impedance. Outputs can be generated from one or (optionally) two channels. Each channel is independently programmable and outputs can be generated from the front or rear terminals.

The 3245A has selectable input trigger sources/events, including two internal trigger buses, external inputs, and software triggering. In addition, a sync pulse output is available from front or rear panel ports. Gated, dual frequency, and synchronized mode operation for output waveforms can be selected by the trigger mode. For synchronized mode operation, a single reference frequency can be used for two-channel or multiple 3245A synchronized waveform outputs. In addition the 3245A can be programmed to wait a specified time or to wait for a specified event.

The 3245A can be programmed from the front panel via HP-IB. ASCII or binary data formats are available and input/output buffering can be used for HP-IB operation. Waveforms can be stored in 3245A memory for future output or can be precomputed and then stored for faster output. Instrument or channel states can be stored in continuous non-volatile memory and recalled in the event of a power failure.

Most 3245A commands can be entered from the front panel, using the keys or using Menu operation. Commands enterd from the front panel that return data (query commands) return the data to the front panel display.

DC voltage

• Output ranges in high resolution mode (0 Ω): 1 V, 10 V
• Output ranges in high resolution mode (50 Ω): 0.5 V, 5 V
• Output ranges in low resolution mode (0 Ω): 0.15625 V to 10 V
• Output ranges in low resolution mode (50 Ω): 0.078125 V to 5 V
• Maximum programmed output in high resolution mode (0 Ω): 1.25 V on 1 V range, 10.25 V on 10 V range
• Maximum programmed output in high resolution mode (50 Ω): 0.625 on 0.5 V range, 5.125 V on 5 V range
• Maximum programmed output in low resolution mode: Equal to the output range
• Output resistance 0 Ω mode: <0.5 Ω
• Output resistance 50 Ω mode: 49.9 Ω to 50.6 Ω
• Noise and spurious response, DC to 30 Hz: 50 µVp-p, 10 µVrms; 7 µVp-p, 16 µVrms
• Noise and spurious response, 30 Hz to 250 kHz: 2 mVp-p, 6 mVrms
• Accuracy in high resolution mode: 0.00071% + 85 µV in 10 V range; 0.00077% + 15 µV in 1 V range
• Triggered DC: Up to 2048 voltage levels can be stored for sequential ouput. A new level will be output with each trigger input. The sequence will start over after the last level is output. Trigger frequency can be up to 1 MHz

DC current

• Output ranges: 0.1 mA, 1 mA, 10 mA, 100 mA
• Noise and spurious response, DC to 30 Hz: 0.0002% of range p-p in high resolution; 0.004% of range p-p in low resolution
• Noise and spurious response, 30 Hz to 250 kHz: 0.02% of range + 0.7 µA p-p in high resolution; 0.04% of range + 0.7 µA p-p in low resolution
• Triggered DC: Up to 2048 current levels can be stored for sequential ouput. A new level output will be output with each trigger input. The sequence will start over after the last level is output. Trigger frequency can be up to 1 MHz

AC voltage

• Frequency ranges: 0 to 1 MHz for sine, arbitrary, and square (with duty cycle at 50%); 0 to 100 kHz for ramp; 0 to 100 kHz for square (with duty cycle not equal to 50%)

• Frequency ranges: 0 to 100 kHz for sine and arbitrary, 0 to 10 kHz for ramp and square
• Frequency resolution: 0.001 Hz
• Frequency accuracy: ±50 ppm
• Peak-to-peak output ranges: 0.2 mA, 2 mA, 20 mA, 200 mA
• Ramp duty cycle range: 5% to 95% with <1% resolution
• Arbitrary waveform: Depth 2048 points, amplitude resolution 12 bits, Typical 3 dB BW 100 kHz
