Description
A 3-inch optical flat is a precision-made, flat optical surface used to test and calibrate various optical instruments and systems. Typically made from high-quality, low-expansion glass or fused silica, these flats feature a polished surface with a precision of λ/10 or better, ensuring a deviation of no more than 1/10th of a wavelength from perfect flatness. The 3-inch diameter provides a sufficient testing area for many applications, including interferometry, laser systems, and optical metrology. With a thickness of around 1 inch, these optical flats are designed to minimize distortion and provide a stable, rigid platform for precise measurements. They are often coated with a reflective material, such as aluminum or silver, to enhance their performance and are commonly used in laboratory settings, quality control, and research institutions to ensure the accuracy and reliability of optical instruments and systems.
Specifications:
- Material: Typically made from high-quality optical glass, such as fused silica or BK7, to ensure optical clarity and stability.
- Surface Flatness: Precisely engineered to have a flat surface with a high degree of accuracy, usually specified in fractions of a wavelength of light (e.g., λ/10 or λ/20) to meet stringent optical requirements.
- Diameter: 3 inches (76.2 mm) in diameter, providing a sufficiently large area for optical measurements and inspections.
- Parallelism: The two surfaces of the optical flat are parallel within tight tolerances, ensuring accurate measurements when used in conjunction with another optical element.
- Coating: Optionally coated with an anti-reflection coating to minimize unwanted reflections and improve measurement accuracy.
- Surface Quality: Carefully polished to achieve a high-quality optical surface, typically with low surface roughness (e.g., < 10 Å RMS) to minimize scattering and interference effects.
- Thickness: Uniform thickness throughout the flat to maintain optical integrity and facilitate handling and mounting.
